Are there general situations where I shouldn’t get a massage? +

Yes, there are several situations (contraindications) where massage should be avoided or postponed to ensure your safety and well-being. It is crucial to inform your therapist of your complete health history. Generally, you should avoid massage if you have:

  • Fever or Contagious Illness: If you have a fever, flu, cold, or any contagious skin condition, it’s best to reschedule to prevent spreading illness and allow your body to recover.
  • Acute Inflammation: Massaging an area with acute (recent, severe) inflammation can worsen the condition.
  • Certain Skin Conditions: Avoid massage over areas with open wounds, burns, severe rashes, or infections.
  • Recent Surgery or Significant Injury: Allow adequate healing time and consult your doctor before receiving massage after surgery or a major injury.
  • Blood Clots (DVT): If you have a known or suspected deep vein thrombosis (blood clot), massage is contraindicated as it could dislodge the clot.
  • Uncontrolled High Blood Pressure: While relaxation massage can be beneficial, significant circulatory changes can occur. Consult your doctor if your hypertension is not well managed.
  • Certain Medical Conditions: Conditions like severe osteoporosis, bleeding disorders, some heart conditions, or if you’re undergoing active cancer treatment (like chemotherapy or radiation) often require physician clearance and specialized massage techniques.

When in doubt, always discuss any health concerns with your doctor and your licensed massage therapist before your session. Your safety is our top priority at Tamu Health & Wellness.

What should I do after my massage session? +

After your massage, it’s important to drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins. Rest and avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day if possible. A warm bath with Epsom salts can also help to further relax your muscles. Listen to your body and enjoy the feeling of relaxation.
